Children's Eye Health

Studies over the years have provided detailed understanding of the stages of vision development in children. Research also has shown that 1 in 20 preschool-age youngsters and I in 4 school-age children have serious vision problems. One of the most prevalent and critical is amblyopia, in which one eye becomes significantly weaker than the other.

Amblyopia can result from crossed eyes, a turned eye or severe near- or far-sightedness, among other problems. Amblyopia often can be corrected but only if detected in time.

Research has shown that if started early -usually before school age - treatment with an eye patch or corrective lenses often is successful. Protect your children by having their eyes examined by an eye doctor at birth, at 6 months of age and again at age 4 or 5 before school begins.
